Fall Special! 20% off All Sails

Introducing the one and only Tantara - designed and built right here in NYC. She's a true local, crafted by the legendary Sparkman & Stephens and constructed at Minneford Yacht Yard on City Island. These guys were giants of the sailing world - their previous collaboration won the America's Cup twice.

Tantara is a thoroughbred ocean racer - built to tackle anything the ocean could throw at her, she gives a very stable ride and will never meet anything she can't handle.  She's also comfortable and spacious, boasting a generous 44 feet of open deck space to lounge and enjoy a relaxing cruise.

Why Sail With Us?

The Experience

Join us for a one-of-a-kind tour of New York Harbor.  We depart from Brooklyn Bridge Park, sail south around Governors Island, go right by the Statue of Liberty, and finish up with breathtaking views of the city.  We aim to sail the boat as much as possible.  Your ride can be tailored from fast and exciting to peaceful and relaxing.  For locals, sailing is the best way to get out of the city without actually having to leave.

We're passionate sailors with decades of experience, and we're excited to share that with you.  Whether you want to help sail the boat (no experience required), or sit back with a drink, you can be as involved as you want!

BYOB - you're welcome to bring any food or drink aboard!  The marina is surrounded by some of the best wine shops, restaurants, and specialty grocery stores.  We're always happy to provide recommendations.

We offer 4 sails a day, including a sunset cruise.

Our Captain

IMG_20240819_021259.jpg

So let’s tell you a bit more about our Captain.  Sam has been sailing since he was 12, starting off on the waters of Lake Michigan in Chicago. He went to college in Maine, but he's been in NYC for over a decade now, which makes him an official New Yorker (or so he claims!).

Sam's been a sailing instructor, coached high school and college racing teams, and got his captain's license back in 2015.  Before the pandemic hit, he had a "regular" job, but was still moonlighting as a charter captain. He enjoyed it so much he decided to come back to sailing full time, and that's when North River Sailing was born in 2022!

Sam has a 50 Ton USCG Masters License with a Sailing Endorsement, so you can trust that you're in good hands when you're out on the water with him.

What makes us different

We Actually Sail

We started North River Sailing because we love to sail, and we want to share that passion with you. Whenever possible, we raise our sails, turn off the engine, and actually sail the boat. While some sailing charters leave their motor running the whole time and pretend to sail, we want you to have the full experience–from the exhilaration of wind-filled sails to the peaceful sound of water lapping the hull. There’s really nothing like it!

Your Own Space

One of the unique features of Tantara is the large open deck up front. While most sailboats seat you in the cockpit with the captain (which is also an option on our boat), being up front gives you the space to spread out and spend time with your friends and family in privacy.

We're Dog Friendly

We love dogs and they’re welcome onboard for our private sails. We’ll set them up with water and a comfortable place to lie down.

We ask that they wear a harness so we can tether them to the boat as a safety precaution. Unfortunately, we cannot allow dogs on our group sails. While we love your dogs, some people are allergic or averse, and we want it to be a welcoming environment for everyone.

We have two types of sails to choose from:

Private Sail

Set out on the water with just you and your friends, or have an unforgettable date night.  You'll have the boat all to yourself, so spread out and make yourself at home!

2 Hours

2 people from $440

3-6 people from $600

Book a Seat

Reserve a spot on a small group sail with like-minded explorers. There will never be more than 6 people on the boat, so you'll have no problem finding a place to get comfortable. You might even make a new friend or two!

2 Hours

$110 per person

2 person minimum

Personalize your sailing experience

BYOB

Our favorite acronym! You’re welcome to bring your own drinks. There are great wine and beer shops right by our marina, and we have cups, openers, and everything else you might need on the boat!

Snacks

Food is always a good idea! Our neighborhood has some of the best restaurants and specialty grocery stores in the city. Whether you're in the mood for pizza, caviar, or something else, we're happy to provide recommendations!

Special occasions

Getting engaged? Celebrating a Birthday? Need to apologize to your mother-in-law? Speak to us about how we can make your sailing experience extra special.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We want you to be safe and comfortable during your sail, we never sail in dangerous conditions. This includes thunderstorms, heavy rain, fog, and excessively high winds. Your captain will make a final call on canceling your sail. In the event of cancellation, you’ll receive a full refund and the option to reschedule.

That said, forecasts are pretty unreliable, especially more than 24 hours out. We never cancel a sail more than a few hours from time of departure. That said, if you have a busy schedule the day of your sail, let us know, and we’ll do our best to work with you on rescheduling your sail ahead of time. We do sail in light rain, moderately high winds, and cold temperatures. We’d love to promise you perfect weather for your sail, but we can’t control the weather…yet.

Keep in mind that the forecast on the weather app that came with your phone is objectively terrible. We subscribe to a lot of different professional weather models to get a better sense of what the conditions will be during your sail. We recommend Windy if you want to take a look for yourself.

It’s worth noting that while we cancel for your comfort and safety, our boat would be fine in anything New York Harbor can throw at her. She’s a proven ocean sailor, having crossed the Atlantic multiple times, and you’ll never see open ocean conditions in the harbor.

  • We’re located in One15 Brooklyn Marina, right by Pier 5 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.  The official address is 159 Bridge Park Drive, that will get you most of the way there.  Once you arrive at the corner, walk past the Oddfellows ice cream stand and soccer fields on your left, and you’ll see the gate to the marina.  We’ll meet you at the gate!

If you’re having any trouble getting here, give us a call at 917-460-056

  • If you booked a private sail, don’t worry, we’ll wait for you! We’ll do our best to give you the full sail, but we’ll likely need to come at the original time to accommodate our next scheduled sail.

If you booked a group sail, and there are other passengers on the boat, we’ll have to depart on time. Please try to arrive 10 minutes early to make sure you have enough time to find us. It’s not fair to the other passengers to cut their experience short. We understand that things happen, and we’ll try to reschedule your sail. Unfortunately we cannot offer refunds if you’re running late.
